Managing CUs

Resource Center Home

This topic applies to Designer versions 10.0.3 and later.

With the release of 10.0.3, the Compatible Unit (CU) library was freed from its blob structure and moved to a flat table format. This makes managing CUs easier and allows for CU referencing. With the elimination of the blob structure, the process for programmatically creating, modifying, and deleting CUs has changed. Administrators can also use the CU Administrator tool in ArcCatalog to manage CUs with a user-friendly interface. This topic provides a brief discussion of CU referencing with subtopics that outline the specifics of managing CUs in versions 10.0.3 and later:

CU Referencing

In the past if you updated a CU within the library, you'd also have to update each and every favorite that contained a copy of that CU. CU referencing eliminates this need.

With CU referencing, favorites contain a reference or a pointer to the original CU in the CU library instead of a complete copy of the object. So, updates to a CU in the library are automatically reflected in any favorites that reference the CU. This functionality is integrated into Designer and requires no configuration.

Designer uses a combination of the following information to reference a CU. This combination must always be unique for each CU in the library.

WMS Code + Table Name + Subtype
