Add Insulators

Resource Center Home

There are several types of insulators you can add to an assembly like pin, post, spool, or suspension. Follow these steps to add insulators to an assembly:

Because Assembly Creator does not model the exact physical specifications for the insulators, the Overhead Design Analysis (OHDA) tool will not calculate transverse wind loads on the equipment.
  1. Click the plus (+) symbol next to the cross arm that will hold the new components.
  2. Select Insulator from the drop-down menu.
  3. Give the insulator a name. This name does not have to be unique.
  4. Set the direction of the offset as either left or right. This field determines what direction to offset the insulator from where the pole and cross arm intersect.
  5. Set the Horizontal Offset. This field determines the distance Assembly Creator sets the insulator from center.
  6. Select the type of insulator from the Spec drop-down list. Assembly Creator populates this list with the insulators created on the components tab. Each time you change this value, the display reflects the current selection, highlighting the equipment in yellow. Refer to the Insulator topic in this guide for information on creating these components.
  7. Click Create. Assembly Creator places the insulator in the design and removes any highlighting.

OHDA Assembly Creator does not allow users to place insulators on the middle cross arm of a triple cross arm assembly (the inner board). You might be inclined to add insulators to the first cross arm on the assembly, then continue to add cross arms until you have added all three, but we recommend adding all the cross arms first, then placing insulators on the outer cross arms. This will help you build assemblies more efficiently. Here are the recommendations when adding insulators to cross arms:

Single Cross Arm:

Add insulators to that cross arm.

Double Cross Arm:

Add insulators to either cross arm.

Triple Cross Arm:

Add insulators to either the first or third cross arm (the two outer cross arms). Add all cross arms first, then add insulators to the appropriate cross arms.
