The FiberOpticCable is a complex edge (linear) network feature that represents a complete fiber optic cable. For instance, a single FiberOpticCable edge feature will define the location and path of a single fiber optic cable between two locations. All of the objects that represent the internal components of the FiberOpticCable will be related to this single feature.
If one of the network junction feature classes (SplicePoint, PatchLocation, DevicePoint, TransitionPoint or SpliceLocation) is added to the middle of a FiberOpticCable feature, the feature will be split and all of the fiber connections will be preserved correctly. The actions that result from such a split will be dependant upon the type of junction feature. The actions will be described in more detail for each junction feature.
Attributes (required fields in red): FiberCount: long integer - This field contains the total number of glass fibers that are contained in a FiberOpticCable. OverheadUnderground: text - This field indicates whether the FiberOpticCable has been installed in an aerial (overhead) or subterranean (underground) environment. The field has a string data domain called Fiber Overhead Underground that contains the values overhead and underground. This field is only required to take advantage of riser and reporting functionality. This field can be dropped if an organization has fiber optic cable installations of a single type and does not plan to install cable by the other method (either overhead or underground). CableName: text - This field is used to store a company name for the FiberOpticCable. This could be a name that describes the two end points of the FiberOpticCable. The name could also be a concatenation of the LocationIDs or company numbers of the devices on either end of the FiberOpticCable. The name should have operational meaning to the organization and field personnel. CableType: text - This is a description of the FiberOpticCable construction type. The values in the related domain, Fiber Optic Cable Type, should reflect all the various FiberOpticCable construction types used by an organization. Examples include – ADSS (All Dialectric Self Supporting), UG Armorred and ADF Drop. CableLength: double - This is the length of the FiberOpticCable itself, not the length of strands within the FiberOpticCable. This field should contain a length that represents all of the FiberOpticCable between two devices including any slack loops. This will always be a length that is greater than the GIS calculated length of the feature. This length can be determined by a number of methods. The most accurate source for determining fiber optic cable length is an OTDR. The second most accurate source for FiberOpticCable length is the footstamp (in the US) marked of the outer jacket of the FiberOpticCable. The difference in footstamp markers can be used as an accurate installed measurement of FiberOpticCable length. Field and design documents may be the next reliable source of FiberOpticCable length. These documents may contain a total length without noting the actual footstamp values. The last resort for determining FiberOpticCable length is to sum the GIS length of the linear FiberOpticCable feature with the length values stored for any slack loops that are attached to the FiberOpticCable. CableLengthSource: text - This field denotes the method for determining how the length was collected for a specific FiberOpticCable. This field uses the Fiber Optic Cable Length Source domain to provide a valid list of choices.
GlassLength: double - This is the length of the glass fiber strands that are contained within a FiberOpticCable. This length will always be longer than the FiberOpticCable length because the glass fibers are twisted within the FiberOpticCable. This length is important for determining the exact location of an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) event within a fiber strand.
This length can be determined by multiplying the FiberOpticCable length by the manufacturers twist factor and then adding that value to the FiberOpticCable length. (FiberOpticCable Length * Twist Factor) + FiberOpticCable Length
FieldNotesLength: double - This field stores other length values from external documents or sources. This could include lengths from CAD drawings. Note that this value will be multiplied by the Twist Factor to populate the length.
StartCableIncrementMarking: long integer - This field holds a length measurement value that is stamped on one end of a FiberOpticCable. This value does not necessarily need to be lower than the EndFootstamp, but the absolute difference between the two values should represent the actual FiberOpticCable length.
EndCableIncrementMarking: long integer - This field holds the complementary length value to the StartFootstamp.
CableMarkingUnitOfMeasure: text - This field denotes the unit of measure that is specified for a cable. It is used in conjunction with the numeric values from the StartCableIncrementMarking and the EndCableIncrementMarking fields to determine the length of the cable. Typical values for this field are Feet and Meters.
CableTwistFactor: double - This is the manufacturer's published twist factor for the glass strands within a FiberOpticCable. This twist factor is a constant and can therefore be used to determine the actual length of glass strands within a FiberOpticCable (see GlassLength).
CableDiameter: double - This field stores the diameter of the cable. It should have a domain associated with it if there are a discrete number of values to be populated for this field, even if it is a large number of values. This value should also be pre-populated within the favorites so that editors do not need to maintain it.
CableOwner: text - This is the organization that owns the FiberOpticCable. The FiberOpticCable may have a number of lessees for strands within a FiberOpticCable, and this attribute is tracked per FiberOpticCable.
SinglemodeAvailabilityQty: long integer - This field is used to sum the number of available singlemode strands within a FiberOpticCable. This field should only be populated by an autoupdater that make this determination and should not be editable by users. This field is required in order to take advantage of the autoupdater that populates it. This field is used by the Two Point Trace Tool to determine available singlemode fibers between two points in the network. Therefore, it should not be deleted from the model.
MultimodeAvailabilityQty: long integer - This field is used to sum the number of available multimode strands within a FiberOpticCable. This field should only be populated by an autoupdater that make this determination and should not be editable by users. This field is required in order to take advantage of the autoupdater that populates it.
This field can be used by the Two Point Trace Tool to determine available multimode fibers between two points in the network. If your system does not contain any multimode fibers then it should be removed from the model.
DateInstalled: date - This is the date that the FiberOpticCable was installed. This information can usually be collected from as-built or work order documents.
InstalledBy: text - This is the contractor that installed the FiberOpticCable. The Fiber Contractors domain should contain all organizations that are responsible for fiber construction. As this list of contractors changes, this domain should be updated. If the domain is out of date, the "Other" value can be used and the contractors name can be entered in the comments field.
DateCommissioned: date - This field is used to track the date that the first fibers were lit in the FiberOpticCable. This field will only be useful to a small segment of organizations. If this information is not currently maintained and there is not a compelling reason to start maintaining this data, this field should be removed from the model. It is not used in any specific tool or report.
InfrastructureClass: text - This field can be used classify fiber optic cables in the system. Examples of classifications are Backbone, lateral and service drop. If these classifications do not have significant operational meaning to your organization, then this field should be dropped. It is not used in any specific tool or report. The Fiber Infrastructure Class domain is assigned to this field.
DocumentHotLinkPath: text - This field can be used to store a path to a file on file server that can be retrieved as a hotlinked file. Some configuration of the Esri hotlink tool or a custom hotlink tool will be required to fully utilize this field.
ReelID: text - This is the ID of the reel from which the FiberOpticCable was pulled. This value can be used to track any manufacturer defects back to a specific spool for warranty purposes. This value will be used in future reel management applications and should not be deleted.
TracerWireIndicator: long integer - This field denotes whether a wire is buried with an underground FiberOpticCable to assist locators in determining the path of a FiberOpticCable. The Yes/No domain is assigned to this field.
EstSMAttenuation1310: double - This is the manufacturer’s estimated attenuation for singlemode fibers that is measured in the range from 1250 nm to 1350nm, which is commonly stated as the 1310 nm wavelength. This attenuation is a measurement stated in decibels (dB) per kilometer from the manufacturer’s specifications. Since this value will apply to all singlemode fibers within the cable, the attribute is carried at the cable feature rather than the fiber object. The Fiber Estimated Attenuation Per Map Unit domain is assigned to this field.
EstSMAttenuation1550: double - This is the manufacturer’s estimated attenuation for singlemode fibers that is measured in the range from 1500 nm to 1600nm, which is commonly stated as the 1550 nm wavelength. This attenuation is a measurement stated in decibels (dB) per kilometer from the manufacturer’s specifications. Since this value will apply to all singlemode fibers within the cable, the attribute is carried at the cable feature rather than the fiber object. The Fiber Estimated Attenuation Per Map Unit domain is assigned to this field.
EstMMAttenuation850: double - This is the manufacturer’s estimated attenuation for multimode fibers that is measured in the range of 850nm, which is commonly stated as the 1310 nm wavelength. This attenuation is a measurement stated in decibels (dB) per kilometer from the manufacturer’s specifications. Since this value will apply to all multimode fibers within the cable, the attribute is carried at the cable feature rather than the fiber object. The Fiber Estimated Attenuation Per Map Unit domain is assigned to this field.
EstMMAttenuation1310: double - This is the manufacturer’s estimated attenuation for multimode fibers that is measured in the range from 1250 nm to 1350nm, which is commonly stated as the 1310 nm wavelength. This attenuation is a measurement stated in decibels (dB) per kilometer from the manufacturer’s specifications. Since this value will apply to all multimode fibers within the cable, the attribute is carried at the cable feature rather than the fiber object. The Fiber Estimated Attenuation Per Map Unit domain is assigned to this field.
CableVendor: text - This is the vendor from which the cable was purchased. If this field is not of interest and does not provide value to an organization, it may be removed.
CableManufacturer: text - This is the manufacturer of a FiberOpticCable. This information is tracked primarily for warranty considerations. The Fiber Cable Manufacturer domain is assigned to this field. Remove this field if it does not offer any direct and recognizable benefit to your organization.
CatalogNumber: text - This field contains the number in the manufacturer's catalog that corresponds to the Fiber Optic Cable. It uses the Fiber Optic Cable Manufacturers Catalog Number domain.
InstalledTension: text - This field contains the value of the tension of the cable when it was installed. It uses the Fiber Optic Cable Installed Tension domain.
MaximumTension: text - This field contains the value of the cable's maximum tension. It uses the Fiber Optic Cable Maximum Tension domain.
OverlashedIndicator: long integer - This boolean field (yes/no value) indicates whether the cable has been overlashed on to a messenger wire between two poles. If your organization does not overlash cables, then remove this field from the model. If this practice happens in the future, the field can always be added.
ProposedFiberOpticCableInd: long integer - This tracks the current status of a cable as either proposed or installed. This allows proposed features to be placed and attributed exactly as they will be placed when installed. A designer may experiment with different configurations within a version without affecting the default view of the network. These features can be posted to Default if they are disconnected from installed features or if procedureal rules about the use are established. The field stores a yes or no value. You may replace this field with a "CableLifeCycleStatus" field that tracks a greater depth of cable statuses.
AbandonedIndicator: long integer - This field denotes whether a FiberOpticCable has been abandoned in place. This will typically occur for underground cables that are difficult or expensive to recover. FiberOpticCable that have been abandoned should also be physically disconnected from the Esri geometric network. It is preferable to have a gap to denote this.
WorkOrderNumber: text - This tracks the work order number of the original job that installed the fiber optic cable. This field should only be kept if an organization has a reliable way of capturing, maintaining and utilizing this information.
SegmentID: text - This is used for tracking cables that participate in a "Transition Point Span." In these spans, a transition point (Demarcation Point or Riser) will break a cable into segments without real splices. In reality the transition point does break the cable, but it creates pass-through connections of type "Continuous" so that analysis tools do not take their losses into consideration. All of the fields other than Owner and Overhead/underground are maintained as being the same on either side of the transition point.
SegmentLength: double - This is the proportioned cable length value for a segment of a transition point span.
SegmentGlassLength: double - This is the proportioned glass length of a segment in a transition point span.
GlobalID: GlobalID - This field contains a unique number (GUID) that is generated and maintained by ArcGIS. This value is used for all relationships in the ArcFM data model and is required for Fiber Manager to function properly.
FiberParent: GUID - This field contains the GlobalID of the parent object to the current object.
ThisFiberClassModelName: text - This field stores the class model name assigned to the feature class on which the field resides. It is used in conjunction with the FiberParentClassModelName field to determine the GlobalID that will be placed in the FiberParent field.
FiberParentClassModelName: text - This field stores the class model name assigned to the feature class that is the parent of the class on which the field resides. It is used in conjunction with the ThisFiberClassModelName field to determine the GlobalID that will be placed in the FiberParent field.
FiberChildClassModelName: text - This field stores the class model name of a child object to the object on which the field resides.
