With the elimination of the blob structure in favor of a flat table format, the process for programmatically creating, modifying, and deleting CUs has changed. Administrators can also use the CU Administrator tool in ArcCatalog to manage CUs with a user-friendly interface.

CU Referencing

CU referencing eliminates the previous requirement in which if you updated a CU within the library, you'd also have to update each and every favorite that contained a copy of that CU.

With CU referencing, favorites contain a reference or a pointer to the original CU in the CU library instead of a complete copy of the object. So, updates to a CU in the library are automatically reflected in any favorites that reference the CU. This functionality is integrated into Designer and requires no configuration.

Designer uses a combination of the following information to reference a CU. This combination must always be unique for each CU in the library.

WMS Code + Table Name + Subtype
