Cloning Machines and MSMQ

Version: 10.2.1c and 10.2.1c SP3

Resource Center Home

MSMQ uses a unique identifier (QMID) to distinguish between different machines that is unique to MSMQ. This unique identifier is stored in the registry and is persisted through restarts of the MSMQ services. QMID also identifies cache entries containing IP addresses of senders. If a system has multiple machines running MSMQ with the same QMID, the can misroute messages by sharing the cache rows.

The following may act as a workaround for this issue:

  1. Open Computer Management or Server Manager on the Server machine.
  2. Stop the MSMQ Service.
  3. Open regedit.exe.
  4. Expand and open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters\Machine Cache folder.
  5. Delete the QMID value.
  6. In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters folder, add a SysPrep DWORD. Set this value to 1.
  7. Start the MSMQ Service.
