Configuring Responder
MSMQ Timeout Errors

This applies to Windows Server 2003 SP1

There is a known Microsoft issue related to MSMQ timeouts that may impact Responder implementations. By design, MSMQ disconnects every five minutes of inactivity and waits 60 seconds before attempting to reconnect. During this wait time, any Responder communication attempts would result in reach queue timeout errors.

  1. To alleviate this issue, Microsoft recommends setting the wait time to 4 seconds (rather than the default setting of 60).
  2. Open the Registry and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters.
  3. Right-click the Parameters key and select New > DWORD value.
  4. Name this DWORD value: WaitTime.
  5. Right-click WaitTime and select Modify.
  6. Set the Value Data field to the number of seconds (e.g., 4) MSMQ should wait before attempting to reconnect.
