Configure Map Insets

Map insets allow the user to designate a portion of the map in a source frame and show a zoomed version of the source in a destination frame. The destination frame may also use an external file in several formats as its source. There are two types of map insets. A Scaled Map Inset depicts the zoomed contents of the source frame in the destination frame. A Linked Map Insert shows an external file in the destination frame. Formats of the external file include: .bmp, .emp, .dgn, .dxf, .dwg, .jpg, .gif, .png, and .tif.

To configure the Map Inset feature class for use in ArcMap, first create a map inset feature class with the following fields and data types. When you select the ArcFM Map Inset feature (custom object), the fields, data types and subtypes are created automatically. Click Finish.

Next, set the visibility of the subtype fields and assign the Custom Field Editor:

Right-click the MapInset feature class and select ArcFM Properties Manager.
Select the Object Info tab.
In the Create Edit Task field, select Create ArcFM Map Inset.
Click Apply.
Click the Field Info tab.
Select Scaled Map Inset as the Subtype.
Select the FilePath field.
In the Field Properties window, ensure the Visible field is set to No. This subtype does not require a path to an external file, therefore this field is not necessary to the user.
Click Apply.
Select Linked Map Insert as the Subtype.
Click the FilePath field.
In the Field Properties window, ensure the Visible field is set to Yes. This subtype does use a path to an external file, and the user will need to see it.
In the Custom Field Editor field, select ArcFM File Picker.
Click Apply.
Select the Field Model Names tab.
Click the FilePath field.
Assign the PATH field model name from the Domain Independent Field Model Name domain. The PATH model name may be in a different domain, depending on how your administrator configured the domains. In the Minerville sample data, PATH is located in the Domain Independent Field Model Name domain.
Click OK.
