CathodicProtectionDevice is an abstract class. Cathodic protection systems prevent corrosion in underground metal structures such as steel pipes, fittings, and valves. Metal structures corrode because stray electric current flows from the relatively “anodic” structure to “cathodic” soil. To prevent this, cathodic protection systems provide a source of current to make the metal cathodic, causing the current to flow from the source, through the soil (which acts as an electrolyte), and to the pipe thus preventing corrosion. Insulation is also used to reduce the amount of corrosion on pipes.

Cathodic protection systems consist of a source of direct current (often a rectifier), anodes, and wire. Current flows from the source through the ground bed containing anodes, through the soil to the pipe, and back to the rectifier. Electrons flow away from the ground bed to the pipe. This causes the anodes to deteriorate over time, but the pipe is protected.

CPTestPoint, CPAnode, CPRectifier, and CPBondJunction derive attributes from the CathodicProtectionDevice abstract class.
