Create Favorites

Some features in Fiber Manager have multiple levels of related objects. ArcMap does not support placing a feature with multiple related object levels. Therefore, Fiber Manager requires the use of Favorites for these features.

The following Fiber Manager features maintain multiple levels of related objects and should be placed only using favorites:

You may create favorites for any (or all) of the Fiber Manager features. Only these three require favorites. You may wish to create a new Fiber Optic category for these favorites.

PatchLocation and Device Favorites: Schneider Electric recommends creating a "master" favorite that includes the following features: PatchLocation and Device with all possible related objects (all levels). You may then use this master favorite to create all other favorites without the need to save, close and re-open. Simply enter a new description and click the Create Copy button, then delete the features and related objects you don’t need.

FiberOpticCable: Favorites for this feature should NOT be created in the same manner as recommended for the PatchLocation and Device objects (using a master favorite). Schneider Electric recommends starting with the cable with the smallest fiber count and using it to add additional buffer tubes and fibers. If a mistake is made (e.g., missing attribute), the mistake needs to be corrected only in the favorites created so far. If the mistake is made in a "master" favorite, it could potentially exist in many more related records. This method also encourages you to save favorites more often.

Importing Minerville Sample Favorites

If you are using the same data model as the sample data (i.e., using the Classic data model), you may optionally import favorites from the Minerville sample database rather than creating them. If you implemented Option 1: Import Sample Schema and Data Model when configuring the Classic Fiber Features, then you will not need to complete this step.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Ensure that all tables and relationship class names in your SDE database exactly match the tables and relationship class names in the Minerville sample database. If they don't match exactly the import will work, but the imported favorites will be corrupted.

    You can safely rename your SDE tables to make them match the Minerville sample data. However, this will corrupt any existing favorites.
  2. Export the Fiber favorite category from Minerville using the Export option in the ArcFM Favorites Manager.
  3. Open the exported XML in a text editor (e.g., Notepad) and perform the following find/replace operations:

    TableName="ArcFM.

    "ArcFM" in the Replace With column above refers to the owner of the tables. If your tables are owned by another user, replace ArcFM with this user name (e.g., SDE). The period after ArcFM is intentional and must be included in the Replace With text.
  1. Import the exported favorites into your SDE geodatabase using the Import option in the ArcFM Favorites Manager.
